Our eCommerce Web Design Company’s Process

Every store we build follows a structured path
from strategy through launch.
  • 01
    eCommerce Strategy & Discovery
We start by learning your business. What you sell, who buys it, what’s working and what isn’t.

We define goals, identify your competitive edge and determine which eCommerce platform fits what you’re trying to build.

Everything our eCommerce web design company does after this point is based on what we figure out in this phase.
  • 02
    Information Architecture & UX Planning
We map out how people will navigate your store before anyone opens a design tool.

That means the team at our eCommerce web design company conducts audience research and creates detailed wireframes, user flow and sitemap structures for every key page.

If your store needs to support multiple languages, currencies or regions, we sort that out now. Fixing a structure problem in a wireframe costs you almost nothing, while fixing it in a live store is a different story.
  • 03
    eCommerce UI & Creative Design
Some stores need a fully custom interface built from zero.

Others work better with a solid theme tailored to the brand and loaded with the right content.

Our eCommerce web design company figures out which approach fits your project and your budget, then builds out every screen with interactions placed where they help people buy.

You review it all and nothing moves forward until you sign off.
  • 04
    Responsive eCommerce Development
Our developers take the approved design and turn it into a working store.

We take care of product catalogs, checkout logic, payment gateways, shipping rules and third-party integrations. It loads fast and looks right on every screen size.

If the project calls for custom functionality, we build that too. Our eCommerce web design company handles all of this under one roof so you’re not coordinating between separate teams.
  • 05
    Quality Assurance (QA)
Nothing goes live until we’ve gone through the entire store ourselves.

We open it on different devices and browsers, run through the checkout process multiple times and look for anything that could get in a customer’s way.

A button that breaks on Safari, a page that drags on mobile, a discount code that throws an error. We catch all of it before your customers do.
  • 06
    Launch & Optimization
When you’re happy with everything, the store goes live. We keep an eye on it for the first few days because that’s when small issues tend to surface.

After things settle, we shift our attention to how the store is performing, i.e., what pages are people spending time on, where do they leave, which products get clicks but not purchases. We use that data to keep improving your store over time.

As an eCommerce web design company, we don’t consider a project finished just because it launched.

eCommerce Website Maintenance & Support

Your store doesn’t stop needing work after it goes live.
We stick around to manage updates, monitor your store’s performance and keep everything running smoothly.
Ongoing Platform Updates
High-tech workspace with glowing screens

Every eCommerce platform rolls out updates on its own schedule and not all of them go smoothly.

We stay on top of each release, test it against your store and apply it so nothing breaks.

WHY DIGITAL SILK?

Why Work With An eCommerce Web Design Agency

Building an online store that sells takes eCommerce strategy, platform expertise and a team that understands how to turn traffic into revenue.

That’s what an eCommerce web design firm brings to your project.

Digital Silk's digital marketing and web design agency services

Professional eCommerce Web Design

Every professional eCommerce web design decision we make ties back to one thing. Will it help someone buy?

We don’t add features because they look impressive in a portfolio.

We add them because they make it easier for your customers to find what they want, trust your brand and complete a purchase.

Light bulb with glowing effect

Scalable eCommerce Architecture

The store you need today won’t be the store you need in two years.

Maybe you’re adding product lines, expanding into new markets or dealing with traffic spikes you didn’t expect.

Our eCommerce web design agency builds stores on architecture that can grow with you instead of holding you back.

Optimized Checkout Experiences

This is where most stores lose people, with too many form fields, confusing shipping options and a payment screen that feels sketchy.

We’ve redesigned enough checkouts to know exactly where customers bail and why. We cut out everything that gets in the way so the path from cart to confirmation takes as few clicks as possible.

Our eCommerce web design company has redesigned dozens of checkout flows and the results show up directly in our clients’ revenue.

Secure & Reliable eCommerce Infrastructure

People won’t buy from a store they don’t trust.

We make sure your eCommerce site design is built on solid, secure infrastructure so shoppers don’t think twice about entering their card details.

SEO-Optimized eCommerce Websites

Most eCommerce stores get built first and then someone thinks about eCommerce SEO after the fact. We do it the other way around.

Our eCommerce website design services include clean URL structures, fast load speeds, schema markup and product page optimization as part of the build itself.

So, when your store launches, Google already knows what to do with it.

Benefits Of Professional eCommerce Website Design Services

  • 01
    Higher Conversion Rates
A store built by an eCommerce web design company isn’t just prettier. It’s structured around real shopping behavior. Where do people look first on a product page? How many steps can a checkout have before someone gives up?

We know the answers because we’ve tested them across dozens of stores. That knowledge goes into every build and it shows up in your conversion numbers.
  • 02
    Post-Launch Support
A slow store loses customers. Our eCommerce web design company builds stores that load fast because that’s what shoppers expect.

If a page takes too long, people leave. We make sure that doesn’t happen to your store.
  • 03
    Seamless eCommerce Integrations
Most eCommerce businesses run on more than just their store. There’s an inventory system, a shipping provider, an email tool, maybe a CRM on top of that.

We hook all of it up during the build so you’re not logging into five different dashboards or copying order details into spreadsheets. Our eCommerce web design company connects all your systems during store building, so everything works together from day one.
  • 04
    Future-Proof eCommerce Platforms
Nobody wants to rebuild their store from scratch two years from now.

We pick platforms that have strong communities behind them, get regular updates and won’t box you in when your business outgrows what you started with.

Your store should be able to handle new markets, new payment options and new product lines without a major overhaul.

eCommerce Web Design Company FAQs

Which ecommerce platforms do you build on?

Shopify Plus, Adobe Commerce (Magento) and WooCommerce. Between them they cover everything from a boutique store to an enterprise catalogue with millions of SKUs.

Broadly: Shopify Plus for speed to market and low operational overhead, Adobe Commerce for complex B2B rules, multi-store or heavy customisation, WooCommerce when the store sits alongside a content-led WordPress site.

We recommend based on your catalogue, integrations and internal team – not on what we’d prefer to build.

Should we choose a headless ecommerce architecture or a traditional setup?

For most businesses, traditional. Headless gives you excellent speed and real flexibility across multiple channels, but it costs more to build, needs ongoing developer support for front-end changes, and takes some control away from your marketing team.

It earns its keep when you’re selling across several channels, running a large catalogue with demanding performance needs, or have an in-house dev team.

If you’re mainly running one storefront, a well-built traditional setup will be faster to launch and cheaper to own. We’ll give you a straight recommendation after looking at your actual requirements.

How do you handle migrating our customer data and order history from an old platform?

Carefully, and to a checklist refined over many migrations. We map and migrate customer accounts, order history, products and content, run the whole thing in a staging environment first, and reconcile record counts and totals against the old system before anything goes live.

SEO is the piece most migrations get wrong, so we plan 301 redirects for every URL and preserve metadata and structured data.

Passwords usually can’t transfer between platforms for security reasons – we’ll plan a smooth reset flow so customers aren’t confused. AI helps us flag data anomalies at scale, with a manual review before sign-off.

Can you integrate our ERP, CRM, and inventory management systems?

Yes – complex integrations are a core part of what we do. We build custom API connections to sync products, inventory, pricing, orders and customer records between your store and your ERP, CRM, PIM, WMS or accounting system, with error handling and monitoring so a failed sync gets caught rather than silently corrupting data.

Where we’ve built a secure connector before, we reuse it to cut development time. If your system has no modern API, we’ll scope a middleware approach and be upfront about the effort involved.

Do you use pre-built ecommerce themes to speed up the launch?

No. Every storefront is custom designed around your products and your customers’ buying journey, because that’s where conversion rate actually comes from – a theme is designed for the average of thousands of stores, not for yours.

We do speed up delivery by reusing proven components from our own library and by augmenting our dev teams with AI, but the design itself is bespoke. In our experience the money saved on a theme gets lost many times over in conversions.

How do you design product pages to maximize conversions?

By removing doubt. A high-converting product page answers the questions a buyer would otherwise leave to go and research: clear pricing and availability, customer support, honest photography from the angles that matter, specifications where they’re relevant, delivery and returns stated plainly, and real reviews.

We give the buy box visual priority, keep the add-to-cart action visible as you scroll, and place trust signals where hesitation happens rather than in the footer.

Then we test – layout, imagery, copy and CTA – and let the data settle disagreements about taste.

How do you balance high-res product images with fast page load speeds?

Modern formats and smart loading order. Product images are served as WebP or AVIF at multiple sizes so a phone never downloads a desktop-sized file, and everything runs through a CDN.

The main product image and buy box load first as priority elements, while gallery thumbnails, reviews and recommendation carousels load lazily as you scroll.

We optimise against LCP and INP specifically, because on ecommerce those two correlate most directly with revenue. You don’t have to choose between looking good and loading fast – you just have to build it properly.

What is your process for testing the checkout flow before the site goes live?

Checkout gets the heaviest testing of anything we build. Each dev team has a dedicated QA member, and we run software-assisted testing across hundreds of scenarios plus manual testing.

We check every payment method including declines and failed transactions, tax and shipping calculations across regions, discount and gift card logic, guest and registered checkout, inventory edge cases like out-of-stock during checkout, order confirmation emails, and the full flow on real mobile devices.

We also place live test orders end to end before launch. For ecommerce projects the CTO signs off before deployment.

How do you handle site search and product filtering for large catalogs?

With proper search and filtering, not the platform default. For large catalogues we implement dedicated search with typo tolerance, synonyms, autocomplete and merchandising rules so you can promote the right products.

Filtering is faceted and built on a clean product taxonomy, which means the underlying data has to be right first; we’ll often clean up attributes as part of the project.

We also review real search queries after launch, because what customers type tells you what’s missing from your catalogue and your categories.

How do you reduce cart abandonment through design?

Mostly by removing reasons to hesitate. Guest checkout as standard, shipping costs and delivery dates shown early rather than sprung at the final step, a visible progress indicator, minimal form fields with address autocomplete, all the payment methods your customers expect including wallets, and trust signals right where payment details are entered.

Then we back it with abandoned cart email flows and, where it fits, retargeting.

How do you ensure our ecommerce site is secure and PCI compliant?

By keeping card data out of your site entirely. Payments are handled by certified gateways and processors, so card details never touch your servers – that’s the single most important thing any store can do, and it keeps your PCI scope to the simplest level.

On top of that we implement SSL across the site, a web application firewall and DDoS protection through Cloudflare, encryption in transit, role-based admin access with two-factor authentication, regular patching, malware monitoring and automated backups. Worth being clear:

PCI compliance is a shared responsibility – we build and maintain the technical side, and your own processes and staff access matter too. We’ll show you exactly where the lines are.

What happens if the site goes down during a major traffic spike, like Black Friday?

We plan for the spike before it happens. If you host with us, we load-test the infrastructure against your expected peak ahead of major sales events, scale server resources in advance, and put caching and CDN rules in place to absorb the traffic.

Our DevOps team actively monitors server load during those events with automated alerting, and we operate a documented incident response process with encrypted backups and a disaster recovery plan if something does go wrong.

For Black Friday specifically, we’d agree a readiness plan and a freeze on code changes with you well in advance.

Are there hidden transaction fees or recurring costs after the build?

Nothing hidden from us. Digital Silk charges only for work you’ve explicitly approved. There are genuine third-party running costs that come with any online store, and we’d rather you plan for them now: payment gateway transaction fees (Stripe, PayPal and similar), your platform’s own licence or revenue share – Shopify Plus and Adobe Commerce both have one – hosting and maintenance, plus any paid apps or extensions your setup needs.

We map those out during scoping so your true cost of ownership is on the table before you sign, not discovered later.

How do we manage products and inventory after the site launches?

You’ll be trained to do it yourself before launch. We produce a bespoke handover document for your store and run one-to-one sessions with the people who’ll actually use it, covering adding and editing products, managing stock, running promotions and discount codes, processing orders and pulling reports.

Where your inventory lives in an ERP or another system, we set up the sync so you manage stock in one place rather than two.

What post-launch support do you offer for ecommerce businesses?

Every store gets a standard warranty period straight after launch to resolve any bugs at no cost if you website is hostied with us.

Beyond that, most ecommerce clients stay on a retainer covering technical maintenance and security updates, hosting and maintenance, conversion rate optimisation, new features and seasonal campaigns, catalogue and content management, and digital marketing.

Ecommerce sites aren’t ‘finished’ at launch – the testing and improvement after go-live is usually where the biggest revenue gains come from and we can supported it through our retainer packages designed directly for your needs.
